Overview

Understanding versioned APIs is key to keeping backward compatibility with Xano. This knowledge is fundamental to preserving functionality for apps depending on older API versions. It lets developers roll out fresh features or modifications without disturbing current users. Important aspects involve setting up different API versions, managing endpoints and database tweaks independently, and using Xano's tools to support multiple versions at the same time. This guarantees a smooth changeover and continuous harmony for all client applications that depend on the API.

How to use Xano’s versioned APIs for backward compatibility?

Step 1: Set Up Your Initial API

  1. Head over to the Xano dashboard.
  2. Click on "Add API Group" to create a new one.
  3. Set up and configure your API endpoints for the first version (like /v1/).
  4. Test them out to make sure everything's working fine.

Step 2: Duplicate API Group for a New Version

  1. Find the API group you made in Step 1.
  2. Click the three-dot menu next to its name and choose "Duplicate API Group."
  3. Rename this new group to show it's a new version (like /v2/).

Step 3: Modify the New API Version

  1. Go into the new versioned API group.
  2. Make the changes you need to the endpoints or data structures, but keep it backward compatible.
  3. Test each modified endpoint thoroughly.

Step 4: Maintain Backward Compatibility

  1. Make sure the original version (/v1/) stays operational and unchanged.
  2. Document any differences between versions so users know what's changed.
  3. Check that users of the original API (/v1/) aren't affected by the new version (/v2/).

Step 5: Update Documentation and Notify Users

  1. Update the API documentation to include info about the new version.
  2. Clearly mark which endpoints belong to each version and how they differ.
  3. Let all stakeholders and users know about the new version, giving them the necessary migration details.

Step 6: Provide Support for Multiple Versions

  1. Keep an eye on both versions (/v1/ and /v2/) for any issues.
  2. Offer support to users moving from the old version to the new one.
  3. Plan and communicate any future deprecation timelines well in advance.

Step 7: Use Version Headers (Optional)

  1. Sometimes, it might be better to manage versions through headers instead of URL paths.
  2. Set up Xano to recognize custom headers indicating the version (like X-API-Version: 2).
  3. Adjust your routing logic within Xano to parse and act on these headers accordingly.
