Overview

Utilizing Xano's built-in JWT authentication makes securing API endpoints easier by offering a uniform way to verify user identities. JSON Web Tokens (JWT) are encoded tokens representing user credentials, ensuring only authorized users can access particular data or perform specific actions. This guide explains the steps to set up JWT authentication in Xano, from generating tokens to validating them in API requests, enhancing both security and integrity of applications.

How to use Xano’s built-in JWT authentication?

Step 1: Sign in to Xano

First things first, log in to your Xano account at xano.com. If you don't have an account yet, go ahead and sign up for one. It's quick and easy.

Step 2: Create a New API

Head over to the dashboard and create a new API if you haven't got one already. Just click on the "Create" button and pick "New API". Simple, right?

Step 3: Add an Authentication Container

In the API section, click on the "+ Add" button. From the drop-down menu, select “Authentication” to create an authentication container. This will come with JWT settings by default.

Step 4: Configure the JWT Settings

Inside the Authentication container, tweak the JWT settings to fit your needs:

  • Secret Key: Make sure you have a secret key set up for encoding and decoding the JWT.
  • Token Expiration: Set how long you want the token to be valid.

These settings are usually preconfigured, but you can change them if you need to.

Step 5: Create User Table

Make sure you have a user table in your database. This table should have fields for user credentials, like email and password.

Step 6: Create a Sign-Up Endpoint

Go to the API section, click "+ Add Endpoint", and create a "POST" endpoint for user sign-up. This endpoint will:

  • Accept user details (username, email, password).
  • Hash the user's password.
  • Store the user information in the database.

Step 7: Create a Login Endpoint

Create another "POST" endpoint for user login. This endpoint will:

  • Accept user's login credentials.
  • Validate the credentials by checking against the database.
  • Generate a JWT token upon successful authentication.
  • Return the generated token to the user.

Example response within the endpoint:

{
  "token": "your_generated_jwt_token"
}

Step 8: Protect Endpoints using JWT

To protect other endpoints using JWT:

  • Go to the endpoint you want to protect.
  • Click on the "Security" tab.
  • Enable JWT authentication.
  • Specify that a valid JWT token is required to access this endpoint.

Step 9: Test the Authentication Flow

Test the whole authentication flow:

  • Use the sign-up endpoint to register a new user.
  • Use the login endpoint to authenticate the user and get a JWT token.
  • Use the token to access protected endpoints by setting it in the Authorization header as Bearer <your_token>.

This way, you can make sure your endpoints are properly protected and that JWT tokens are being verified as they should be.
