Overview

Glide's relations and lookups are incredibly useful tools that let you create dynamic, interconnected data structures in your app. Relations help you link data from different tables using shared attributes, creating meaningful connections within your dataset. Lookups give you the ability to quickly fetch specific pieces of related information, making data access and manipulation a breeze. Understanding these features can greatly improve the interactivity and complexity of your Glide app, turning it into a more adaptable and responsive tool for users.

How to use Glide’s relations and lookups?

Step 1: Open Glide and Select Your Project

Head over to the Glide app dashboard and pick the project you want to work on. If you don't have one yet, just click "New Project" and follow the steps to set it up. Easy peasy.

Step 2: Open the Data Editor

In your project workspace, look for the "Data" tab at the bottom of the screen. Click it. This will open up the Data Editor, where you can see all the tables tied to your project.

Step 3: Select the Table

Pick the table where you want to create relations or lookups. You'll see the table names as tabs in the Data Editor. Click on the tab of the table you want to tweak.

Step 4: Create a New Column for Relations

In the table you chose, scroll to the right until you find an empty column. Click on the "+ Add Column" button. Give this column a name that makes sense, like "User_Relation" or "Order_Relation."

Step 5: Configure the Relation Column

After creating the new column, a configuration panel will pop up. Set the column type to "Relation." Choose the column in your current table that you want to link to another table.

Step 6: Select the Target Table and Column

In the relation settings, pick the target table and the target column you want to link to. For example, if you're setting up a relation to show a user’s orders, select the user ID as the key column in both tables.

Step 7: Enable Multiple Matching Rows (Optional)

If you need the relation to map multiple rows (like one user having multiple orders), turn on the "Match Multiple" option in the relation settings. This lets multiple matching rows from the related table link to the current row.

Step 8: Create a Lookup Column

Go back to the Data Editor and add another new column. Name it something like "User_Email_Lookup" or "Order_Total_Lookup." Set the column type to "Lookup."

Step 9: Configure the Lookup Column

In the configuration panel for the lookup column, select the relation column you made earlier. Then, pick the specific column from the related table that you want to pull data from. For instance, if you've linked orders to users, you might want to fetch the order total or order date.

Step 10: Verify the Data

After setting up the lookup, check the Data Editor to make sure the related data is showing up correctly in the columns you created. If everything's set up right, rows in the relation columns should fill with the right data from the related table.

Step 11: Use the Relations and Lookups in Your App

Now that the relations and lookups are ready, use them in your app's design. You can create list components, detail components, or use the fetched data in various UI elements to show related info dynamically.

This process helps you build complex data relationships within Glide apps, making for more interactive and data-rich user experiences.
