How to use Glide’s relation column to link data?

Step 1: Open Your Glide App and Data Editor

Head over to your Glide app at Glide and open up the app you want to tweak. Make sure you can see the Data Editor by clicking on the "Data" tab in the Glide interface.

Step 2: Identify the Tables to Link

Figure out which two tables you want to connect. Maybe you want to link a "Users" table to an "Orders" table using user IDs.

Step 3: Add a New Column for Relation

In the table where you want to set up the relation (let's say "Orders"), add a new column:

  • Click the "+" (plus) button next to the column headers.
  • From the dropdown menu, pick "Relation" to create a new Relation column.

Step 4: Configure the Relation Column

A configuration menu will pop up once you choose "Relation":

  • Give your new Relation column a name, like "UserRelation."
  • In the "Data" section, choose the column from the current table (e.g., "Orders") that will be the key for the relation, such as "User ID."
  • Next, select the target table to link with, like "Users."
  • Finally, pick the matching column in the target table (e.g., "Users") that corresponds to the key in the current table, which would typically also be "User ID."

Step 5: Determine the Relation Type

Decide if the relation should be:

  • Single: If you expect one matching item (e.g., each order links to one user).
  • Multiple: If you expect multiple matching items (e.g., a user might have multiple orders).

Choose the right type in the configuration menu.

Step 6: Save and Validate the Relation

Once you've set up the relation column:

  • Click "Done" to save.
  • Browse through some sample data rows to make sure the relation is correctly linking the data between the two tables.

Step 7: Utilize the Relation in Your App

Use the created relation in your app components:

  • In components like lists, detail views, or inline lists, you can now pull in related data seamlessly.
  • Configure relevant components to use fields from related tables, enriching the display or functionality according to the app's needs.

By following these steps, the Glide relation column effectively links data across tables, enabling more dynamic and powerful app functionalities.
