Overview

Glide's array columns let users bundle and handle lots of data in just one column, adding more complexity to data structures and functionality in Glide apps. With these array columns, data relationships can be simplified, app performance gets a boost, and displaying or tweaking related data sets becomes easier. This tool really shines when making dynamic lists, dealing with multi-part forms, and intuitively organizing grouped info. Knowing how to use array columns well can greatly boost your app-building skills in Glide.

How to use Glide’s array columns?

Step 1: Open Your Glide Project

Head over to your Glide dashboard and open up the project where you want to use those array columns.

Step 2: Access the Data Editor

Once you're in your project, find and click on the "Data" tab. This will bring up the Data Editor, where you can see all the tables and columns in your app.

Step 3: Create the Columns for the Array

In the Data Editor, you'll need to create the individual columns that will make up your array. For instance, if you need an array of email addresses, create multiple columns like "email 1," "email 2," and so on. Make sure their names follow a sequential pattern like "Column 1", "Column 2", etc.

  • Click on the "+ Add Column" button.
  • Name your new column (e.g., "email 1").
  • Repeat this step for each element you want in the array.

Step 4: Array Column Naming Convention

Ensure the columns follow a sequential naming convention. Glide will create an array column when it detects a numerical sequence in the column names. For example, columns named "Item 1," "Item 2," "Item 3," etc., will automatically be considered part of the same array.

Step 5: Verify Array Column Formation

Glide should now automatically form an array column from these individually numbered columns. Go back to the "Data" tab and check that the array column has been created. The array will usually show up as a new column.

Step 6: Utilize the Array Column

Once the array column is formed, you can use it in various components within Glide. For example, you can bind this array column to a list component to display the array items in a list format.

  • Open the tab where you want to use the array column.
  • Select a component that supports arrays, like a List component.
  • In the component settings, bind the new array column to the data source.

Step 7: Test Your Array Column

To make sure your array column works as intended:

  • Preview your app.
  • Navigate to the section where the array should be used.
  • Check if all the array items are displayed correctly.

Make any necessary adjustments to the data or components to get the desired functionality.

Step 8: Update and Maintain

Keep the array columns updated as needed. If you need to add more items to the array, just add new sequentially named columns in the Data Editor. Make sure to follow the same naming convention to keep the array structure intact.

By following these steps, you can efficiently implement Glide's Array Columns for various use cases within your Glide apps.
