How to use Figma's team libraries for shared assets?

Step 1: Create a Team in Figma

  • Fire up Figma and click on your profile icon in the top-left corner.
  • Hit "Create new team."
  • Give your team a name and pick the plan that suits you best (Free or Professional).

Step 2: Create a Team Project

  • Head over to the team you just set up.
  • Click "New Project" to start a fresh project within your team.
  • Name your project and click "Create Project."

Step 3: Create or Upload Assets

  • Open up the project you just made.
  • Click “New File” to start a new Figma file or upload one you already have.
  • Design or upload the assets (icons, components, styles, etc.) you want to share.

Step 4: Publish Team Libraries

  • Open the Figma file with your assets.
  • Click on the “Assets” panel on the left side of the screen.
  • Enter the “Team Library” section by clicking the book icon.
  • Click “Publish” to share styles and components from your file.
  • A dialog box will pop up listing all the assets. Confirm which ones you want to publish, then click "Publish."

Step 5: Enable Team Libraries in Other Files

  • Open another file within the same team.
  • Click on the “Assets” panel on the left.
  • Go to the “Team Library” section by clicking the book icon.
  • Toggle the team library on.
  • The assets from the library will now be available in your file.

Step 6: Use Shared Assets

  • With the team library enabled, go to the “Assets” panel.
  • Drag and drop any shared components or styles into your design.
  • The assets will stay linked to the team library, so they're always up to date.

Step 7: Update Team Libraries

  • Any changes made to the assets in the original file can be updated across all files using the library.
  • Go to the original file, make your changes, and then click “Publish” again.
  • Users in other files will get a notification that the library has been updated and can click "Update" to get the latest versions.

Step 8: Manage Library Access

  • Go back to the team settings by clicking on the team icon.
  • Manage permissions under the "Members" tab to control who can view or edit the libraries.
  • Adjust access settings as needed to make sure only the right team members can make updates.
