How to use Figma's prototyping features for user testing?

Step 1: Set Up Your Design Files

Alright, first things first. Make sure all your design components and screens are neatly organized in your Figma file. Group related elements together and give your layers and frames clear names. Trust me, it makes navigation a breeze.

Step 2: Create Frames for Each Screen

Now, for each screen in your user flow, create individual frames. Think of each frame as a screen in your prototype. Make sure they're sized right for the device you're designing for, whether it's mobile, tablet, or desktop.

Step 3: Enable Prototyping Mode

Switch over to Prototyping mode by clicking on the "Prototype" tab in the right-hand panel. This is where the magic happens, allowing you to create interactive flows between your frames.

Step 4: Link Frames with Interactions

Pick an element in a frame that you want to be interactive, like a button. Drag the blue circle that pops up on the right side of the element to the frame you want to navigate to. You'll see a connection line appear, showing the interaction between the two frames.

Step 5: Configure Interaction Details

After linking frames, head over to the right panel to configure the interaction details. Choose the "Trigger" (like On Click or On Hover), specify the "Action" (Navigate to, Open Overlay, etc.), and pick the "Animation" type (Instant, Dissolve, Slide In).

Step 6: Add Overlays and Modals

For overlays or modals, create a new frame for the overlay content. Link the element that triggers the overlay to this new frame and select "Open Overlay" as the action. Adjust the overlay's position and behavior if needed.

Step 7: Add Interaction Details to "Back" or "Close" Buttons

If your prototype includes back navigation or modals, make sure to link "Back" or "Close" buttons to the correct frames. This helps create a realistic navigation experience.

Step 8: Set Up Prototype Start Point

Choose the frame that will be the starting point for your prototype. Click on the frame and select "Set as Starting Frame" to define the initial view.

Step 9: Share the Prototype

Click the "Share" button in the top-right corner to generate a shareable link. Make sure the prototype link permissions are set right (like anyone with the link can view or specific people). Copy the link and share it with your test users.

Step 10: Use Comments for Feedback

Enable comments by clicking on the "Comment" icon in the top panel. Users can leave feedback directly on the prototype. Review and respond to comments within the Figma file to iterate on the design.

Step 11: Test Interactions and Perform User Testing

Test the entire prototype to make sure all interactions work as expected. Conduct user testing sessions using the shared prototype link. Watch users interact with the prototype and gather feedback based on their experience.

These steps leverage Figma's prototyping features to create interactive prototypes ready for user testing.
