How to use Figma's pen tool for custom shapes?

Step 1: Access the Pen Tool

Alright, let's get started! First, grab the Pen Tool from the Figma toolbar or just press `P` on your keyboard. The icon looks like a classic pen nib.

Step 2: Start Creating Points

Click on the canvas to drop your first anchor point. Each click after that adds another point to your shape.

Step 3: Create Straight and Curved Lines

- For straight lines, just click to add each new anchor point and move your cursor without dragging. - For curved lines, click to add an anchor point and drag the mouse to adjust the direction handles before letting go.

Step 4: Close the Shape

To close your shape, click back on the first anchor point you made. You'll see a small circle icon next to the Pen Tool when you're hovering over that initial point, showing that the shape will close.

Step 5: Adjust Anchor Points and Handles

Use the “Direct Selection Tool” by pressing `V`. This lets you select and drag individual anchor points or direction handles to tweak your shape. Hold `Shift` while dragging to keep angles constrained.

Step 6: Add and Remove Anchor Points

- To add an anchor point, hover over a segment of your shape's path and click when the Pen Tool shows a "+" sign. - To remove an anchor point, click on an existing anchor point when the Pen Tool shows a "-" sign.

Step 7: Convert Points Between Corner and Smooth

Select an anchor point and press `Shift + C` to switch between a sharp corner point and a smooth curved point.

Step 8: Use the Control Panel

Check out the Control Panel at the top to customize stroke properties like color, thickness, and style, as well as fill options for your shape.

Step 9: Utilize Boolean Operations

Combine, subtract, intersect, or exclude your custom shape with other shapes using Boolean operations in the right-hand panel for more complex designs.

Step 10: Save and Export

Once you're happy with your custom shape, save your work. To export, select the shape, right-click, and choose 'Export'. Pick the format you need (PNG, SVG, etc.) for your project.
