How to use Figma's library analytics for design system usage?

Open Figma and Navigate to the Design System

  1. Fire up Figma and log in to your account.
  2. Head over to the project or file where your design system lives.
  3. Click on the file or project to access your design system.

Access the Library Analytics

  1. Once you're in the design system file, glance at the top-right corner of the screen.
  2. Click on the “Assets” panel to open up the library assets.
  3. In the "Assets" panel, find and click on the "Manage libraries" option at the bottom.

Enable Analytics Data

  1. In the "Manage libraries" window, make sure analytics are turned on for the libraries you want to track.
  2. If they’re not enabled, just toggle the analytics switch to start collecting usage data from those libraries.

Review Usage Data

  1. Once analytics are enabled, go back to your main design file.
  2. In the top toolbar, click on the "Library analytics" icon or button.
  3. This will pop open a new window where you can check out various usage metrics.

Understand the Metrics

  1. Component Utilization: See which components are getting the most love. This helps you spot the most valuable parts of your design system.
  2. User Interaction: Look at which team members are using specific components. This helps you figure out who’s most active and how they’re engaging with the design system.
  3. Version Tracking: Check if components with newer versions are being adopted and if older versions are being phased out effectively.

Filter and Export Data

  1. Use the filter options to narrow down the data based on time, user, or specific components.
  2. To share or keep a record, use the export option to download the data in a CSV or other preferred formats.

Iterate and Improve

  1. Based on the analytics, pinpoint areas for improvement in your design system.
  2. Schedule regular reviews to keep an eye on things and adapt the design system to meet user needs effectively.

Communicate Findings

  1. Share insights from the analytics with stakeholders and your team.
  2. Use these findings to drive future design decisions and boost the overall efficiency and consistency of the design system.
