How to use Figma's interactive components for advanced prototypes?

Step 1: Set Up Interactive Components

Alright, let's get started by setting up the basic components for our prototype. Imagine we're creating a button with different states like default, hover, and pressed.

  1. First, design each state of the button inside a Frame.
  2. Then, convert each state into a Component. Just select the frame and use the shortcut Cmd + Alt + K (Mac) or Ctrl + Alt + K (Windows).

Step 2: Combine States into Variants

Next, we need to organize these states using Variants.

  1. Select all the individual component states.
  2. Click on the Combine as Variants button in the right-hand sidebar.
  3. Rename the Variant Properties to match their states, like "Default", "Hover", "Pressed".

Step 3: Add Interactions

Now, let's make these components interactive by adding some interactions between the different states.

  1. Select the component set (the group of variants).
  2. Head over to the Prototype tab in the right-hand sidebar.
  3. Draw a connection from the default variant to the hover variant. In the interaction details, choose While Hovering and set it to change to the hover variant.
  4. Draw another connection from the hover variant back to the default variant. Choose Mouse Leave with similar settings.
  5. Add another interaction from the default or hover variant to the pressed variant using While Pressing.

Step 4: Use Interactive Components in Your Design

Time to integrate these interactive components into your design.

  1. Open or create the frame/layout where you want to use these interactive components.
  2. Drag the interactive component from the Assets panel into your frame.
  3. Adjust and position it as needed.

Step 5: Test Your Prototype

Let's see if everything works as expected.

  1. Click on the Present button in the top-right corner.
  2. Hover and click on the components to ensure all states transition smoothly and accurately.

Step 6: Tweak and Refine

Finally, let's refine those interactions to make sure they meet your design specifications.

  1. Go back to the Prototype tab.
  2. Adjust the Animation settings (e.g., Smart Animate, Ease In, etc.) for better transitions.
  3. Update and save the changes.

By following these steps, you can effectively use Figma's interactive components to create advanced prototypes with smooth and realistic interactions.
