Understanding Boolean Operations in Figma

Boolean operations in Figma let you combine multiple shapes into one complex shape. These operations include Union, Subtract, Intersect, and Exclude.

Step 1: Create the Initial Shapes

  1. Select the shapes tool from the toolbar or press the R key for rectangles, O for ovals, etc.
  2. Draw different shapes on the canvas that you'll use to create a complex shape.

Step 2: Select the Shapes

  1. Hold down the Shift key and click on each shape you want to include in the Boolean operation. Or, click and drag a selection box around the shapes.

Step 3: Accessing Boolean Operations

  1. With the shapes selected, look at the top toolbar.
  2. Find the Boolean operations buttons. The options are:
    • Union (Combine)
    • Subtract (Minus)
    • Intersect
    • Exclude (Difference)

Step 4: Applying a Boolean Operation

  1. Click on the desired Boolean operation button in the top toolbar.
    • Union: Combines multiple shapes into one shape.
    • Subtract: Subtracts the front shape from the one behind it.
    • Intersect: Keeps only the overlapping area of the shapes.
    • Exclude: Removes the overlapping area and keeps the non-overlapping parts.

Step 5: Editing Boolean Groups

  1. Select the newly created Boolean group on the canvas.
  2. Use the Layers Panel to see each shape listed under the Boolean operation group.
  3. Double-click any shape inside the group to move or resize it. Adjustments will dynamically update the Boolean shape.

Step 6: Expanding Boolean Groups

  1. If you want to make the changes permanent, select the Boolean group.
  2. Right-click and choose Flatten to make the complex shape a single vector path that can no longer be edited as individual shapes.

Step 7: Fine-tuning and Applying Styles

  1. After creating the final complex shape, you can still apply styles just like other shapes.
  2. Modify the fill color, stroke, shadows, and other properties using the right-hand properties panel.
