How to use Figma's advanced prototype interactions?

Step 1: Open Your Figma File

First things first, open up your Figma file where your design is hanging out. Make sure all the design elements you want to add interactions to are nicely laid out.

Step 2: Switch to Prototype Mode

Now, switch from the Design tab to the Prototype tab. You’ll find it on the toolbar at the top right corner of your Figma workspace. This is where the magic happens, letting you create and connect interactions between your frames.

Step 3: Select an Element for Interaction

Click on the design element you want to use as a trigger for the interaction. It could be a button, image, or any other layer within your frame.

Step 4: Click and Drag to Create a Connection

Click on the small circular handle that pops up on the right side of the selected element and drag it to the frame or element you want to navigate to. This will open the Interaction Details modal.

Step 5: Configure the Interaction

In the Interaction Details modal, you'll see several options:

  • Interaction Trigger: Choose what action triggers the interaction, like On Click, On Drag, While Hovering, etc.
  • Action: Decide what happens after the trigger, such as Navigate To, Open Overlay, Swap With, etc.
  • Destination: If you picked Navigate To, select the target frame.
  • Animation: Pick the animation type (Instant, Dissolve, Move In, Slide In, etc.) and tweak its properties like easing, direction, and duration.

Step 6: Add Advanced Animations

For more complex prototypes, you might need multiple interaction points or animations:

  • Smart Animate: Use Smart Animate to create smooth animations between frames with similar layer structures.
  • Overlay: Use the 'Open Overlay' action to show modal dialogs, menus, or tooltips. Customize their position and close behavior.
  • Preserve Scroll Position: Enable this if the user should keep their scroll position when navigating between frames.

Step 7: Preview Your Interactions

Hit the Play button at the top-right corner of your app to open the prototype player. Interact with your design to make sure all transitions and animations work as you planned.

Step 8: Iterate and Refine

Go back to editing based on what you saw in the preview. Tweak the interaction details, fine-tune animations, or fix any inconsistencies to ensure a smooth user experience.

Step 9: Test User Inputs and Variables (Optional)

For more dynamic prototypes, consider adding inputs like text fields or setting variables to simulate form inputs and logic. This is a bit more advanced but can really mimic real-world product interactions.

Step 10: Share for Feedback

Once you're happy with it, share your prototype with stakeholders or teammates for feedback. Use the Share button to generate a link or invite collaborators directly to view and interact with your prototype.

Following these steps will help you create sophisticated and interactive prototypes in Figma, giving a clear picture of the final product's user experience.
