How to use custom data types in Bubble.io?

Understanding Custom Data Types in Bubble.io   offers powerful database capabilities, enabling you to create custom data types to store and manage information specific to your application's needs. Custom data types serve as the blueprint for the objects you will store in your database, such as users, products, orders, etc. Here’s a step-by-step guide to using custom data types effectively:   Accessing the Data Tab
  • First, navigate to the Data tab in your Bubble.io editor. This is where you will manage your database.
  • You’ll see headings like "App Data" and "Data Types". Focus on the "Data Types" section for now.
  Creating a Custom Data Type
  • Click on the "New Type" button. A popup will appear, prompting you to name your custom data type. Choose a name that accurately represents the type of data (e.g., "Product", "Order", "User", etc.).
  • After naming your custom data type, click "Create".
Adding Fields to Your Custom Data Type
  • Once the custom data type is created, you need to define fields for it. Fields represent the individual pieces of data that make up your custom type.
  • Click on "Create a new field". You will need to name the field and define its type (e.g., text, number, date, etc.).
  • Repeat the process for each field needed for your data type. For instance, a "Product" type might have fields like "Name" (text), "Price" (number), "Description" (text), "Stock" (number), and "Available" (yes/no).
  Linking Custom Data Types
  • Often, custom data types are related. For example, an "Order" might contain references to the "User" who placed it and the "Products" ordered. To create these relationships, use the field type "Data Type".
  • When creating a field, select the custom data type from the dropdown list. This links the current data type to another, forming a relational database.
  • If the field should reference multiple entries of another data type (e.g., an order might include multiple products), check the "This field is a list" option.
  Managing Your Data
  • Switch to the "App Data" section to enter, edit, and view the data stored in your custom data types.
  • For adding new records manually, click the "New Entry" button. Fill out the fields based on the data type's structure and save it.
  • Use the built-in filters and search functionalities to manage and find your data more easily.
Using Custom Data Types in Your Application
  • In the design and workflow sections of the Bubble editor, you can now use your custom data types to create dynamic pages, forms, and workflows.
  • When designing a form or input field, you can bind it to a specific custom data type and field. This allows users to input and modify data stored in your database.
  • Utilize Bubble's powerful workflows to set actions that manipulate these custom data types, such as creating new entries, modifying existing records, or deleting data based on user interactions or automated conditions.
