How to share Figma prototypes with clients?

Step 1: Prepare Your Prototype

Make sure your Figma prototype is all set and looking sharp. Double-check that every interaction and animation works smoothly. Give it a good once-over to catch any missing pieces or links.

Step 2: Set Prototype Start Frame

Pick the frame where you want the prototype to kick off. Right-click on that frame and choose "Set as Starting Frame" from the menu. This is where your client will start when they open the prototype.

Step 3: Adjust Viewing Permissions

Hit the "Share" button in the top right corner of Figma. In the sharing settings, you can tweak who gets to see the prototype:

  • Anyone with the link (lets anyone with the link view it)
  • Only people invited (best for sensitive stuff)

Make sure the dropdown is set to "Can view" so folks can look but not touch.

Step 4: Generate a Prototype Link

In the sharing options, click "Copy link" to create and copy a shareable link to your clipboard. This link is unique and will take the recipient straight to the prototype.

Step 5: Include a Passcode (Optional)

For extra security, especially with sensitive prototypes, you can set a passcode. Toggle the "Link settings" and choose "Passcode protect" to set a passcode that the client needs to enter to view the prototype.

Step 6: Share the Link with Your Client

Send the link to your client via email or whatever communication platform you prefer. Include any extra context or instructions in your message to help them understand the prototype’s purpose and how to navigate it.

Step 7: Provide a Navigation Guide (Optional)

Think about making a quick guide or tutorial on how to get around the prototype, especially if it’s got some complex interactions. This could be a simple document or even a short video.

Step 8: Monitor Client Feedback

Once you’ve shared the prototype, be ready to answer any questions or address concerns. Keep an eye on feedback and be prepared to make any necessary tweaks based on what the client says.

By following these steps, sharing your prototype with clients will be smooth, clear, and secure.
