Overview

Hooking up SMS notifications in Adalo generally means bringing in third-party services, like Twilio, to get text messaging working in your app. First up, you'll sign up for a Twilio account and grab those API credentials. Then, head over to Adalo's external collections settings to plug in these credentials. Next, it's time to set up workflows and triggers in Adalo to make sure SMS notifications go out at the right time—maybe after a user does something specific or when a system event occurs. Stick to these basic steps to boost user engagement and keep communication flowing.

Step 1: Create an Adalo Account and New App

  • First things first, sign up or log in to Adalo.
  • Click on "Create New App" to kick off a new project.
  • Pick a template that fits your needs or just start from scratch if you’re feeling adventurous.

Step 2: Install Custom Actions

  • Head over to the App Settings by clicking on that little gear icon.
  • Navigate to "Integrations".
  • Click on "Custom Actions" and then "Add Custom Action". Easy peasy.

Step 3: Set Up Twilio Account for SMS

  • Sign up for a Twilio account. It’s pretty straightforward.
  • Verify your phone number to get a Twilio phone number for sending SMS.
  • Grab your Twilio Account SID and Auth Token from the Twilio Console. You’ll need these later.

Step 4: Configure Custom Action in Adalo

  • Give your custom action a name, like "Send SMS Notification".
  • Choose a trigger for the custom action, maybe after a form submission.
  • Select "Create" and choose "Custom Action" as the type.
  • Use this endpoint for the HTTP request: https://api.twilio.com/2010-04-01/Accounts/{AccountSID}/Messages.json
  • Don’t forget to replace {AccountSID} with your actual Twilio Account SID.

Step 5: Set Up HTTP Headers and Body

  • Add the required headers:

  • Key: Authorization

  • Value: Basic {Base64EncodedAccountSID:AuthToken} (Replace with your Base64 encoded credentials)

  • For the body, select "Raw" and use application/x-www-form-urlencoded as the content type. Include these key-value pairs:

  • To: The user's phone number.

  • From: Your Twilio phone number.

  • Body: The content of your SMS message.

Step 6: Map Form Data to Custom Action

  • Map the fields from your Adalo form to the custom action fields.
  • Make sure the phone number and message fields match those in Twilio's API.

Step 7: Test The Custom Action

  • Preview your app and perform the action that triggers the SMS notification.
  • Check if the SMS is received on the target phone number. Fingers crossed!

Step 8: Deploy Your Adalo App

  • Once everything’s tested and working, go ahead and finalize and publish your Adalo app.
  • Make sure all users can trigger the SMS notifications correctly.

This guide will help you set up SMS notifications in Adalo using Twilio’s services, ensuring notifications are efficiently delivered based on user actions.
