How to set up a custom domain in Webflow?

Step 1: Purchase Your Custom Domain

Alright, first things first, you need to buy a domain. You can grab one from places like Namecheap, GoDaddy, or Google Domains. Pick your favorite!

Step 2: Access the Webflow Project Settings

Next, head over to your Webflow Dashboard. Find the project you want to set up the custom domain for, and click on it to open the settings. Easy peasy.

Step 3: Add the Custom Domain

Now, go to the "Hosting" tab in the project settings. Look for the "Custom domains" section and hit the "Add custom domain" button. Type in your shiny new domain name (like www.yourcustomdomain.com) and click "Add Domain."

Step 4: Update DNS Settings

Time to update those DNS settings. Log in to where you bought your domain (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.). You need to add some DNS records:

  • A Records: Create two A records pointing to Webflow’s IP addresses:
  • Name/Host: @
  • IP: (Check Webflow’s official documentation for the current IPs)
  • CNAME Record: Create a CNAME record for the "www" subdomain:
  • Name/Host: www
  • Value: proxy-ssl.webflow.com

Make sure to remove any conflicting records, especially other A or CNAME records.

Step 5: Verify the Domain

Head back to your Webflow project settings under the "Hosting" tab. Click the "Check Status" button to see if everything’s set up correctly. It might take a few minutes for Webflow to catch up.

Step 6: Set Default Domain

Choose your default domain by clicking the "house" icon next to the domain you prefer in the Webflow Hosting settings. Usually, you’ll want the one with "www" (like www.yourcustomdomain.com).

Step 7: Publish the Site

Once everything’s verified and the default domain is set, go to the top-right corner of the Webflow Designer and click "Publish." Make sure your custom domain is selected for publishing.

Step 8: SSL Configuration

Don’t forget to enable SSL for your custom domain. In the Webflow Hosting settings, toggle the SSL option if it’s not already on. This will secure your site with HTTPS.

Step 9: Ensure Proper Redirection

Set up 301 redirects if needed. For example, redirect the non-www version to the www version of your domain. This helps with SEO and user experience. You’ll find this in the Hosting settings under the "Redirects" section.

Step 10: Await DNS Propagation

Now, we wait. DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours to fully spread across the internet. Keep checking your domain to see if it’s resolving correctly.

After these steps, your custom domain should be live and working with your Webflow project.
