Overview

A custom 404 error page can really make a difference for users when they hit a dead end. Instead of leaving them stranded, guide them back to content that matters. In Webflow, setting this up is pretty straightforward. Design a page that matches your site’s vibe, provide easy navigation, and set it as the default 404 page in Webflow settings. This keeps your site looking consistent and helps keep visitors around, even when they stumble upon broken links. Knowing how to create and put this into place can lead to better navigation and might even boost overall site engagement.

How to set up a custom 404 error page in Webflow?

Step 1: Create a New Page

  • Log in to your Webflow dashboard.
  • Access the project where you want to set up the custom 404 error page.
  • Click “Pages” in the left sidebar.
  • Hit the “New Page” button.
  • Give the new page a name (usually, it's called “404” so it’s easy to spot).
  • Make sure the “Slug” field is also set to “404”.

Step 2: Design the 404 Error Page

  • While on the new 404 page, add the elements you need (like headers, text, images) to let users know they've hit a dead-end.
  • Personalize your message. Something like “Oops! This page doesn’t exist.” works well.
  • Add navigation options, like a button to take users back to the homepage or a search bar to help them find what they’re looking for.
  • Make sure the design matches the overall theme of your website for a smooth user experience.

Step 3: Set the Page as the Default 404 Page

  • Go back to the “Pages” tab.
  • Click the settings icon (gear icon) next to the new 404 page.
  • In the settings modal, scroll down to the section labeled “404 Page”.
  • Check the box or switch the toggle that says "Set as 404 page".
  • Save the settings.

Step 4: Publish the Website

  • Click the “Publish” button at the top right of the Webflow Designer.
  • Choose the domain(s) where you want the changes to be published.
  • Wait for the publishing process to finish.

Step 5: Test the Custom 404 Page

  • Open a new browser tab.
  • Enter your website URL followed by a random, non-existent page slug (e.g., https://yourwebsite.com/some-random-page).
  • Check that your custom 404 page shows up correctly.

Additional Tips

  • Include helpful links on your 404 page, like links to popular posts or site categories.
  • Use tracking tools (like Google Analytics) to see how often users land on your 404 page and from which links.
  • Make sure the 404 page is mobile-friendly by testing it on different devices and screen sizes.
