How to pass data between workflows in Bubble.io?

Understanding Workflows in Bubble.io   Workflow automation in Bubble.io allows you to design and execute processes that involve data manipulation, user interactions, and external service integrations. To pass data between workflows in Bubble.io, you can use various approaches such as Custom States, URL Parameters, and Data Passing through elements.   Using Custom States
  • Create a Custom State - Select an element (e.g., a page or a reusable element) and go to the Element Inspector. Under the “Custom States” section, add a new custom state, specifying a name and data type.
  • Set the Custom State - In your initial workflow, use the “Element Actions” to set the value of the custom state to the data you want to pass. For instance, after a button click or a successful API call.
  • Access the Custom State - In the subsequent workflow or workflow action, reference the custom state’s value. You can do this by selecting the element, then navigating to its custom states and choosing the one you set the value to.
  Using URL Parameters
  • Send Data through URL - When navigating to a different page or triggering a new workflow, use the “Go to Page” action. In the action settings, you can add Key-Value pairs to the URL, effectively passing data to the next page.
  • Retrieve URL Parameters - On the destination page, use the “Get data from page URL” function to extract the URL parameters’ values. This function is typically used in “Data Source” fields of elements or workflows.
  Passing Data through Elements
  • Use Hidden Input Elements - Place input elements on the page and set them to be hidden. You can set their values through workflows and then read these values in subsequent workflows or actions.
  • Parent-Child Data Transfer - When using reusable elements, pass data from the parent page to the child element through the “Parent group's [field]” mechanism, allowing the child element to access and utilize the parent page’s data.
Combining Multiple Methods for Complex Workflows
  • Custom States and URL Parameters - You can use Custom States for temporary data passing within a single page and URL parameters for persistent data transfer across different pages.
  • Chaining Workflows - Structure your workflows in a manner where each workflow action sets or passes data to the next. For example, workflow 1 sets a custom state, workflow 2 reads from this state and sets a different state or URL parameter, and so on.
