Overview

Tackling multi-language support for API responses in Xano means building a system that can flip languages smoothly depending on what users want or their location. This isn’t just about translating words. It's about arranging data and translations smartly. Utilize Xano’s tools—input/output processing, logic functions, and databases—to manage texts in various languages. Some vital steps? Create tables for each language. Put in place language selection features. Keep data formatting steady. Good planning and architecture are key to serving content in many languages, making the user experience much better and more accessible.

How to manage multi-language support for API responses in Xano?

Step 1: Create a Language Table

  1. Head over to the Data tab in Xano.
  2. Make a new table, maybe call it Languages.
  3. In the Languages table, add these columns:
  • id (Auto-incremented primary key)
  • code (String, like "en", "es", "fr")
  • name (Full name of the language, so it's easier to spot)

Step 2: Create a Translations Table

  1. Create another table, name it Translations.
  2. In the Translations table, add these columns:
  • id (Auto-incremented primary key)
  • key (String, like "welcome_message")
  • language_id (Integer, foreign key that points to Languages table)
  • value (String, the translated text)

Step 3: Populate the Tables with Data

  1. Fill up the Languages table with the languages you need:
  • Example: id: 1, code: "en", name: "English"
  • Example: id: 2, code: "es", name: "Spanish"
  1. Fill up the Translations table with translation keys and values:
  • Example: id: 1, key: "welcome_message", language_id: 1, value: "Welcome"
  • Example: id: 2, key: "welcome_message", language_id: 2, value: "Bienvenido"

Step 4: Set Up an API Endpoint

  1. Go to the API tab and make a new API endpoint.
  2. Set the HTTP method and URL as needed (like, GET /welcome).
  3. Add input parameters to the API endpoint to capture language preference:
  • Example: lang_code (String, required, like "en")

Step 5: Implement Business Logic for Translation Lookup

  1. In the API endpoint's function stack:
  • Add a Query to find the language_id:
    • Table: Languages
    • Filters: code equals {{input.lang_code}}
  • Store the returned language_id using a variable.
  1. Query the Translations table using the language_id and desired key:
  • Table: Translations
  • Filters:
    • language_id equals the stored language_id variable
    • key equals the hardcoded string (like, "welcome_message")
  • Store the returned value using another variable.

Step 6: Format the API Response

  1. Configure the API endpoint to return the translated text:
  • In the response object, use the stored value from the Translations table.
  • Example Response:
    ```json
    {
    "message": "{{translation_value}}"
    }
    ```

Step 7: Testing and Validation

  1. Test the API endpoint using different lang_code inputs:
  • e.g., Access /welcome?lang_code=en should return {"message": "Welcome"}
  • e.g., Access /welcome?lang_code=es should return {"message": "Bienvenido"}
  1. Validate errors and fallback mechanisms (like, default to English if no translation is found).
