Overview

Keeping component overrides in Figma when you detach instances is key for preserving design consistency and making sure everything runs smoothly. Sometimes, it's a must to detach an instance to tweak certain elements without changing the main component or its other instances. Yet, this action can often cause previous adjustments and overrides to vanish, messing up the workflow and forcing you to redo work. Knowing the tricks and best practices to keep overrides secure during detachment will smooth out the design process while keeping everything consistent across the project.

How to maintain component overrides in Figma when detaching instances?

Step 1: Duplicate the Component Instance

First things first, make a copy of the component instance you want to detach. Think of it as your safety net. This way, if anything goes haywire, you’ve got the original to fall back on.

Step 2: Note Down Overrides

Take a good look at the instance for any changes like text tweaks, color shifts, or other property adjustments. Jot these down somewhere safe, maybe in a separate doc or in Figma’s notes section. This will help you reapply them later if needed.

Step 3: Copy Overrides to Clipboard

Select the instance you’re about to detach. Hit Cmd + C (Mac) or Ctrl + C (Windows) to copy it, along with all its overrides, to your clipboard. Easy peasy.

Step 4: Detach Instance

With the instance still selected, right-click and pick "Detach Instance" from the menu, or use the shortcut Cmd + Option + B (Mac) or Ctrl + Alt + B (Windows). This will break the link to the original component, turning it into a regular group of layers.

Step 5: Paste Overrides

Right after detaching, press Cmd + V (Mac) or Ctrl + V (Windows) to paste the copied instance back onto the canvas. Figma usually keeps the overrides intact, so your detached instance should look just like the original.

Step 6: Manually Apply Unretained Overrides

Sometimes, Figma might miss a few complex overrides. Check your notes from Step 2 and manually reapply any missing changes to make sure everything looks spot on.

Step 7: Validate the Design

Give the detached instance a thorough once-over. Zoom in and inspect every detail to make sure all the overrides, like text, colors, and other properties, are correctly applied.

Following these steps will help you keep the look and feel of your component instance consistent, even after detaching it in Figma.
