Overview

Crafting a smooth, interactive prototype in Figma requires linking frames to mimic how a user would navigate. This technique enables a more lifelike depiction of user journeys and interactions in your design. By tying frames together with interactions and transitions, you can create the impression of a true app or website. Be it for pitching to stakeholders or conducting user tests, mastering frame connections in Figma prototypes can majorly boost the storytelling and practicality of your design. Knowing how to link frames well is crucial for building dynamic, user-friendly prototypes.

How to link Figma frames for navigation in prototypes?

Step 1: Open the Prototype Tab

Head over to the top-right corner of the Figma interface and click on the "Prototype" tab. This will switch you from design tools to prototyping tools.

Step 2: Select the Starting Frame

Click on the frame that will be your starting point for navigation. This frame will have an interactive element that users will click to move to another frame.

Step 3: Add an Interaction

Once you've selected the starting frame, click on any interactive element within that frame, like a button or link. This will make the interaction handles pop up.

Step 4: Drag the Interaction Handle

Click and drag the circular interaction handle (it looks like a white circle with a plus sign) to the frame you want to navigate to. This will link the two frames together.

Step 5: Configure the Interaction

After dragging the interaction handle to the destination frame, a pop-up menu will appear where you can set up the interaction details:

  • Trigger: Choose how the interaction gets triggered (e.g., On Click, On Hover).
  • Action: Select the action type, usually "Navigate To" for frame-to-frame navigation.
  • Destination: Verify the target frame this interaction points to.
  • Animation: Choose the type of animation (e.g., Instant, Dissolve, Push) and its duration.

Step 6: Repeat for Additional Frames

Go back to the "Prototype" tab and repeat Steps 2-5 for any other frames you want to link together. Each time, select the frame, then the interactive element, drag the interaction handle to the new destination, and configure the interaction.

Step 7: Test the Prototype

Click the "Present" button located at the top-right corner of the Figma interface to enter Presentation Mode. Test the navigation by interacting with the elements to ensure that all links between frames are functional. Adjust any settings as necessary based on testing feedback.

Step 8: Save & Share

Once you're happy with the prototype, save your work. You can also share the prototype by clicking the "Share" button to generate a shareable link for stakeholders to review. Make sure sharing permissions are set appropriately for viewing or editing.
