Overview

Integrating a third-party API into Adalo lets you pull in external data and services, giving your app a real boost in terms of features and user experience. But before jumping into the integration, make sure to know Adalo’s ins and outs, as well as the API you’re planning to use. Usually, you’ll need to set up API endpoints, handle authentication, and align data fields between Adalo and the external service. Being comfortable with API docs, JSON, and Adalo’s custom actions and collections is key. A carefully thought-out approach will ensure everything works smoothly and efficiently.

How to integrate a third-party API in Adalo?

Step 1: Create an Adalo Collection

  1. Log in to your Adalo account and open or start a new project.
  2. Head over to the "Database" tab.
  3. Click the "+ Add Collection" button to add a new collection.
  4. Give your collection a name and set up the fields that will store data from the API.

Step 2: Set Up the Third-Party API Endpoint

  1. Find the API documentation for the third-party service you want to use.
  2. Take note of the endpoint URL, HTTP method (GET, POST, etc.), required headers, and parameters.

Step 3: Configure External Collections in Adalo

  1. Go back to your Adalo project and click the "+ Add Collection" button again.
  2. This time, pick "External Collections" from the options.
  3. Enter the API endpoint URL, choose the right HTTP method, and add any needed headers or parameters.

Step 4: Define API Response Structure

  1. In the external collection settings, you'll need to define the response structure.
  2. Get a sample response from the API (usually found in the API documentation or by calling the API directly).
  3. Map the response fields to Adalo fields to make sure the data is formatted correctly when received.

Step 5: Test the Connection

  1. Use the "Test" button in the external collection configuration screen to check if the API connection works as expected.
  2. Make sure the data returned matches the fields you defined in Adalo.

Step 6: Use External Data in Adalo UI

  1. Go to the Adalo editor and create a new screen or use an existing one to show data from the API.
  2. Drag and drop components (like List, Text, Image) onto the screen.
  3. Bind these components to the external collection to display real-time data from the third-party API.

Step 7: Create Actions Based on API Data

  1. Add buttons or other interactive components that can trigger actions.
  2. Define actions like creating records, updating records, or even custom actions based on what the external API can do.
  3. Set up the actions to send or modify data using the API's endpoints.

Step 8: Publish and Test the App

  1. Preview the app within Adalo to make sure all API data integrations work properly.
  2. Make any needed adjustments to data bindings or actions based on your testing.
  3. Once you're happy with it, publish the app to the platform you want.

This method lets you seamlessly integrate third-party APIs into an Adalo project, enabling dynamic data interaction within the app.
