Overview

Setting up user authentication in Adalo means creating a secure way for people to sign up, log in, and stay signed in while using the app. Adalo, being a no-code platform, comes with ready-made pieces to manage user authentication. There are email and password fields, verification processes, and database sections to keep user details safe. It’s essential to set these up properly for a smooth and secure experience. Sometimes, extra tools or APIs might be needed for more complex requirements. Knowing how Adalo handles user management is key to adding this important feature effectively.

How to implement user authentication in Adalo?

Step 1: Create User Collection

To manage user authentication, we need a User collection to store user credentials.

  • Head over to the Collections section in your Adalo dashboard.
  • Click "Add Collection" and name it "Users".
  • Add properties like Email and Password. Feel free to add extras like Name, Profile Picture, etc.

Step 2: Add Signup Form

Let new users create accounts with a signup form.

  • From the left panel, drag and drop the "Form" component onto your screen.
  • In the list of collections, pick the Users collection, since new entries will go there.
  • Choose the fields you want, typically Email, Password, and any custom fields.
  • Customize the button text and tweak any additional form settings.

Step 3: Configure Signup Actions

Set actions for when a new user signs up.

  • With the form selected, go to the "Action" tab.
  • Add an action to "Log In" the user after they sign up.
  • Optionally, you can also set actions to navigate to a welcome or home screen after signup.

Step 4: Add Login Form

Allow existing users to log in.

  • Drag another "Form" component onto the screen where you want the login.
  • Select the operation to "Log In" a user.
  • Set the necessary fields for login, usually just Email and Password.
  • Customize as needed.

Step 5: Setup Login Actions

Specify what happens after a successful login.

  • With the login form selected, go to the "Action" tab.
  • Add an action to navigate to the user's Dashboard, Home screen, or wherever logged-in users should go.
  • Optionally, add conditional actions based on user roles or properties.

Step 6: Restrict Access to Screens

Make sure only authenticated users can access certain screens.

  • Go to each screen that should be protected and select it.
  • In the settings panel, turn on the "Logged In User" requirement.
  • Optionally, add rules for different user roles by setting visibility or access conditions based on user properties.

Step 7: Test the Authentication Flow

Before deploying, thoroughly test the authentication flow.

  • Preview the app and try signing up a new user.
  • Log out and then log in with the same credentials to make sure everything works as expected.
  • Check restricted screens to verify that unauthorized access is properly blocked.

Step 8: Fine-tune and Deploy

Adjust and optimize the authentication process before final deployment.

  • Review and adjust form designs, error messages, and workflows.
  • Once satisfied, deploy your app and keep an eye out for any issues.
