Overview

Server-side validation in Xano plays a crucial role by checking user inputs for accuracy and safety before anything is processed. By doing this, it offers an extra shield against things like bad data and security risks, such as SQL injection and script injection. Using server-side validation in Xano takes advantage of built-in functions and validation logic right inside the API endpoints themselves. This quick guide will lead you through the key steps and best practices to put strong server-side validation in place, helping you keep your application environment solid and secure.

How to implement server-side validation in Xano?

Step 1: Create an API Endpoint

  • Head over to the Xano Dashboard.
  • Find "API" in the left sidebar and click on it.
  • Hit the "Add API" button, give your API a name, and click "Create".
  • Inside your new API, click "Add Endpoint".
  • Pick the method (POST, GET, etc.) that fits your needs.
  • Name your endpoint something meaningful.

Step 2: Define Input Parameters

  • Click on the endpoint you just made in Step 1.
  • Scroll down to the "Inputs" section.
  • Click "Add Input".
  • Define the parameters you want to validate, like name, email, password, etc.
  • For each parameter, pick the right type (String, Number, Boolean, etc.)

Step 3: Add Validation to Inputs

  • For each parameter, click on the "Validation" tab.
  • Add rules for validation. For example:
  • String: Set minimum and maximum length, pattern (regex) match.
  • Number: Set minimum and maximum values.
  • Email: Use the predefined email pattern checker.
  • Customize the validation messages if you need to.

Step 4: Implement Custom Validation Logic

  • Under the "Logic" tab for your endpoint, click "Add Step".
  • Choose "Filter" for conditional checks.
  • Write your custom logic. For example, to check if an email exists in the database:
    ```javascript
    // Pseudo-code to check email existence
    if (checkIfEmailExists(input.email)) {
    throw new Error("Email already exists");
    }
    ```
  • You can chain multiple filters for more complex validation logic.

Step 5: Error Handling

  • Under "Logic", add a "Response" step next.
  • Customize the response for failed validations:
  • Choose the error response format (HTTP status code, error message, etc.)
  • Example JSON response:
    ```json
    {
    "status": "error",
    "message": "Invalid input provided"
    }
    ```

Step 6: Test Your Validation Logic

  • Use Xano's built-in API testing tool or a third-party REST client like Postman.
  • Send requests with both valid and invalid input data.
  • Check that the server responds with the correct error messages for invalid data and processes valid data correctly.

Step 7: Deploy Your Endpoint

  • Once validation is correctly implemented and tested, deploy your API endpoint.
  • Click on "Deploy" in the top right corner.
  • Follow the prompts to finalize your deployment.

Step 8: Monitor and Update Validation Rules

  • Regularly monitor your server logs and user feedback.
  • Update validation rules as needed by repeating the earlier steps.
  • Keep your validation logic up-to-date with any changes in business rules or input criteria.
