Overview

Implementing multi-language support in Xano means setting up your backend to effortlessly manage multiple languages across the entire app. Generally, this involves configuring the database for storing content in specific languages, using external localization files, and leveraging APIs to provide translated content according to user preferences. It's also crucial to ensure smooth integration with front-end frameworks for detecting and switching languages. Proper planning and execution can boost user experience, making your application more accessible to people from different parts of the world.

How to implement multi-language support in Xano?

Step 1: Set Up Language Table

First things first, let's create a new table in Xano called languages. You'll want to include these fields:

  • id (Auto-incrementing primary key)
  • code (like 'en' for English, 'es' for Spanish, 'fr' for French)
  • name (Full language name, like 'English', 'Español', 'Français')

Step 2: Create Translation Table

Next up, create another table called translations. This is where you'll store the different translations for your texts. Include fields like:

  • id (Auto-incrementing primary key)
  • language_id (Foreign key linking to the languages table)
  • key (Unique identifier for the text being translated)
  • text (Translated text)

Step 3: Populate Initial Data

Now, let's add some entries in the languages and translations tables. For example:

  • Languages table: ('1', 'en', 'English'), ('2', 'es', 'Español')
  • Translations table: ('1', '1', 'greeting', 'Hello'), ('2', '2', 'greeting', 'Hola')

Step 4: Create API Endpoints

Time to set up API endpoints to fetch translations based on the selected language. An example endpoint could be /get-translation:

  1. Add a Query Parameter called language_code.
  2. In the function stack, use Query All Records to find the language_id based on the language_code.
  3. Use another Query All Records to fetch translations matching the language_id.

Step 5: Implement API Request

In your frontend application, make a request to the /get-translation endpoint with the language_code passed as a parameter. For instance:

fetch('https://your-xano-instance.com/api/get-translation?language_code=es') .then(response => response.json()) .then(data => { // Use the translations in your frontend console.log(data); });

Step 6: Use Dynamic Texts

Update your application to use the fetched translations. Replace hardcoded texts with values from the translation API response. Example:

const translations = { "greeting": "¡Hola" }; // fetched data document.getElementById('greeting').innerText = translations.greeting;

Step 7: Add Fallback Mechanism

Implement a fallback mechanism to handle missing translations. Modify the /get-translation endpoint to return a default language translation if the specified language is not found:

  1. Check if translations exist for the requested language_code.
  2. If not, default to the primary language (e.g., English).

By following these steps, the Xano environment can support multiple languages efficiently.
