Overview

Boosting the security of your Adalo apps with multi-factor authentication (MFA) can't be stressed enough. MFA demands that users verify their identity through multiple factors, offering an additional protection layer beyond a simple password. Though Adalo doesn't have built-in MFA features, you can still incorporate third-party services and tools to get there. This guide dives into the steps and best practices for setting up MFA, ensuring user data stays under lock and key.

How to implement multi-factor authentication in Adalo?

Step 1: Set Up Your Adalo Account

  • Make sure you have an active Adalo account.
  • If you don't have one yet, sign up at Adalo.

Step 2: Create a New App

  • From the Adalo dashboard, click on "Create New App."
  • Choose the type of app you want (like mobile or web).
  • Pick a template or start from scratch if you’re feeling adventurous.

Step 3: Configure Your Database

  • Head over to the database section in Adalo.
  • Create a new collection called "Users" and add fields like username, password, email, etc.
  • Also, create a collection named "Verification Codes" to store MFA codes temporarily. Include fields like User ID, Code, and Expiry Time.

Step 4: Set Up User Registration Flow

  • In your app, add screens for user registration and login.
  • Link these screens to the "Users" collection in the database.

Step 5: Add MFA Code Generation

  • Create a screen for MFA code verification.
  • Add an input field where users can enter the MFA code they receive.
  • Add a button labeled "Verify."

Step 6: Create a Custom Action to Send the MFA Code

  • Use Adalo's integration features to send MFA codes via email or SMS.
  • You can integrate services like SendGrid (for emails) or Twilio (for SMS).
  • Create a custom action that triggers when a user registers or logs in. This action should generate a random code, save it to the "Verification Codes" collection, and send it to the user's email or phone number.

Step 7: Implement Code Verification Logic

  • On the MFA verification screen, add logic to verify the code entered by the user.
  • Check the "Verification Codes" collection to see if the code matches the one stored and if it is within the valid time frame.
  • If the code is valid, proceed with the user login or registration process.
  • If the code is invalid, prompt the user to re-enter the code or resend a new one.

Step 8: Secure Your App

  • Make sure all custom actions and API calls are secure.
  • Regularly update and maintain your app to follow security best practices.
  • Consider adding extra security measures as needed.

Step 9: Test Your Implementation

  • Test the entire flow from user registration to MFA verification.
  • Ensure that the MFA codes are generating correctly, being sent properly, and verified accurately.
  • Analyze and debug any issues that come up during the testing phase.
