How to implement live chat support in Glide?

Step 1: Create a Glide App

  • Head over to https://www.glideapps.com/.
  • Click "Sign In" and log in, or create a new account if you don't have one yet.
  • Hit the "New App" button to kick off a new Glide app.
  • Pick a template or start fresh from a Google Sheet.

Step 2: Setup Your App Layout

  • Open your Glide app in the Glide Editor.
  • Customize the layout, add components to your screens, like a list, user profiles, and so on.

Step 3: Add a Chat Tab

  • In the Glide Editor, click the "+" button to add a new tab.
  • Name this tab "Chat" or something similar.
  • Choose "Form" or "Comments" as the layout for this tab.

Step 4: Configure User Profiles

  • Make sure your Google Sheet (or Glide Table) has a "Users" sheet to store user profiles.
  • Each user profile should have columns like "Name", "Email", etc.
  • Enable user profiles by going to the "Settings" tab in the Glide Editor and turning on "User Profiles".

Step 5: Add a Chat Database

  • Add a new sheet in your Google Sheet (or in Glide Tables) named "Chats".
  • Set up columns in this sheet for "Message", "User ID", "Timestamp", etc.
  • Ensure each message is linked to a user by storing the user's ID or email.

Step 6: Design the Chat Interface

  • In the "Chat" tab, add an inline list component.
  • Bind this list to your "Chats" sheet.
  • Configure the list item layout to show the message and user info.
  • Add a form button to this tab for users to submit new messages.

Step 7: Setup New Message Form

  • Go to the form button settings.
  • Make sure the form inputs for "Message" and "User ID" are correctly linked to the right columns in the "Chats" sheet.
  • Use the special value component to set the "User ID" to the current user's email or ID from their profile.
  • Similarly, use the special value component to set the "Timestamp" to the current date and time.

Step 8: Enable Real-time Updates

  • Ensure your Google Sheet settings are set to auto-update and sync quickly.
  • Alternatively, use Glide's Webhook integration for faster real-time updates, if available.

Step 9: Test the Chat Functionality

  • Preview your app.
  • Send a few messages using different user accounts to make sure the chat functionality works as expected.
  • Verify that the messages appear in real-time and are stored correctly in your database.

Step 10: Publish Your App

  • Once everything is tested and works as expected, go to the "Settings" tab in the Glide Editor.
  • Click "Publish App".
  • Share the app's link with users who need access to the live chat.
