Overview

Embedding in-app notifications into Glide significantly boosts user engagement by providing updates and vital info straight within the app. Key actions include crafting notifications that match your app's interface, setting up triggers for events like new messages or updates, and utilizing Glide's built-in tools like actions, visibility conditions, and rich text components. It's important to find the right balance in how often and how relevant these notifications are to avoid bombarding users. This ensures they add value and enhance the overall user experience.

How to implement in-app notifications in Glide?

Step 1: Set Up Your Glide App

  1. Open up the Glide app dashboard.
  2. Either create a new app or open an existing one where you want to add notifications.

Step 2: Create a Notifications Table

  1. Head over to the Data section in Glide.
  2. Add a new table and call it "Notifications".
  3. Add these columns:
  • User ID: To identify who gets the notification.
  • Message: The notification content.
  • Timestamp: When the notification was made.
  • Read: A boolean column to show if the notification's been read.

Step 3: Add Notification Components

  1. Go back to the app layout editor and create a new screen or tab named "Notifications".
  2. Add a List component and link it to the "Notifications" table.
  3. Customize it to show the User ID, Message, and Timestamp.

Step 4: Setup User-Specific Filtering

  1. In the List component, go to the Filters settings.
  2. Add a filter to show only notifications where the User ID matches the logged-in user's ID.
  3. Use Glide's User Profile settings to define the logged-in user's ID.

Step 5: Implement Notification Triggers

  1. Decide what events will trigger notifications (e.g., new messages, updates).
  2. Use Glide's Action functionalities like "Add Row" in the 'Notifications' table.
  3. Set the actions to automatically fill in the User ID, Message, and Timestamp fields.

Step 6: Mark Notifications as Read

  1. In the List component for notifications, set an action on item tap.
  2. Choose the action "Set Columns".
  3. Configure it to set the Read column to true for the tapped notification.

Step 7: Set Up Real-Time Updates

  1. Enable real-time updates so users can see new notifications without refreshing the app.
  2. In the app's settings, enable automatic synchronization features provided by Glide.

Step 8: Create Notification Badges

  1. On the main app screen or relevant sections, add a notification badge.
  2. Use a relation column to count unread notifications specifically for the logged-in user.
  3. Display this count as a badge on the notifications icon or tab.

Step 9: Test and Validate

  1. Test the notification system by simulating user actions that should trigger notifications.
  2. Verify that notifications appear in real-time, are correctly filtered and marked as read.

Step 10: Publish the App

  1. Once testing is complete, make sure all changes are saved.
  2. Publish the app so users can start getting in-app notifications.
