Overview

In Webflow, adding a parallax scrolling effect can really brighten up a website, making it visually captivating with an interactive, layered experience as folks navigate down the page. The trick here is to have background elements move at varying speeds compared to the stuff in the foreground. This sleight of hand makes it look like there's depth. To pull this off in Webflow, interactions and animations come into play—defining how different bits and pieces move. Knowing your way around Webflow's Designer and Interactions panel, along with grasping absolute and relative positioning, is key. Having a solid idea of what you want right from the start helps breeze through the steps, creating eye-catching, responsive parallax scrolling in no time.

How to implement a parallax scrolling effect in Webflow?

Step 1: Prepare Your Assets

Alright, first things first, let's get those visual assets ready. You want to make sure your background images are top-notch in terms of resolution and quality. They should look great on the web.

Step 2: Open Webflow and Set Up Your Project

Log in to your Webflow account. Got it? Cool. Now, either open an existing project or start a new one. Head over to the page where you want to add that awesome parallax effect.

Step 3: Create a Section

Drag a "Section" element from the Add Elements panel onto your page. This section is going to be the home for your parallax effect.

Step 4: Add a Div Block

Inside that section, drag in a "Div Block" element. This div block is where your background image will live.

Step 5: Set the Background Image

Click on the Div Block and head over to the Style panel. Under the Background section, hit the plus icon and upload your background image. Set it up like this:

  • Background Image: Choose your image.
  • Position: Center.
  • Repeat: No-Repeat.
  • Size: Cover.

Step 6: Make the Div Block Full-Screen

Make sure the Div Block covers the whole screen. In the Style panel, set the width and height to 100%. Here's what you need:

  • Width: 100vw.
  • Height: 100vh.
  • Overflow: Hidden.

Step 7: Set the Position

Select the Div Block again. In the Style panel, set the position to "Relative." This is super important for the parallax effect.

Step 8: Add Content to the Section

Now, add more content to the original Section, but not inside the Div Block. This could be headings, text blocks, or any other elements you want to overlay on the background.

Step 9: Implement the Parallax Effect

Time to set up the parallax effect. Open the Interactions panel (the lightning bolt icon) and choose the "Page scrolled" trigger. Add a new interaction:

  • When Page is Scrolled: Both.
  • Action: Move.

Configure the movement on scroll:

  • Start Scrolling: Transform (Move Y) 0%.
  • End Scrolling: Transform (Move Y) -50%.

This makes the image move slower than the page scroll, giving you that cool parallax effect.

Step 10: Test and Preview

Preview your page to see the parallax effect in action. Tweak the settings if needed to get it just right. You might need to adjust the movement values or image positions.
