Overview

When diving into Xano APIs, managing nested resources in a smart way can really boost your backend setup. By structuring related data sets inside a main resource, it makes getting data easier and cuts down on extra queries. This involves thoughtful planning of how your database connects everything together—think one-to-many or many-to-many relationships. It’s also about mastering methods like join operations and array aggregations. Plus, taking advantage of Xano’s features to create endpoints and custom functions will make everything smoother, keeping your API strong and adaptable.

How to handle nested resources in Xano APIs?

Step 1: Define Parent and Nested Resources

First things first, figure out your main (parent) resource and the related (nested) ones. Think of it like a Blog with its Comments.

Step 2: Create Data Models

Next up, create separate data models for each resource. So, for our example, you'll need a Blog table and a Comment table in Xano's database setup.

Step 3: Establish Relationships

Now, link the nested resource to the parent resource. This means adding a foreign key in the nested resource table. In the Comment table, add a field that references the Blog table.

Step 4: Set Up Endpoints

Time to create API endpoints for both the parent and nested resources. For instance:

  • GET /blogs - This gets you all the blogs.
  • GET /blogs/{id}/comments - This fetches all comments for a specific blog.

Step 5: Write the Query for Nested Resource Retrieval

In the GET /blogs/{id}/comments endpoint, write the query to fetch all comments tied to a specific blog ID. Use Xano's query builder to join Comment with Blog based on that foreign key.

Step 6: Handle Serialization

Make sure the API response serializes the nested resources correctly. This usually means including the related comments within the blog object in the response payload, if needed.

Step 7: Test the API

Test the endpoints using tools like Postman or Xano's built-in API tester. Ensure the nested resources are being fetched and displayed correctly according to the relationships defined.

Step 8: Pagination and Filtering

Think about adding pagination and filtering on the nested resources for better performance and usability. Modify the query in the GET /blogs/{id}/comments endpoint to include these features.

Step 9: Update and Delete Nested Resources

Create POST, PUT, and DELETE endpoints for the nested resources as needed. Make sure to handle the foreign key relationships properly when updating or deleting nested records.

Step 10: Documentation

Finally, document the endpoints and their payloads clearly in Xano's API documentation section. Include examples of request/response for handling nested resources.
