Overview

Handling API requests and responses in Xano means tinkering with data as it flows in and out of your API endpoints. Think of it like fine-tuning a machine. When data comes in, it’s carefully formatted and checked before it touches your database. When it leaves, it’s adjusted to fit what your clients need. Picture it: parsing JSON, filtering fields, tweaking data structures, and ironing out errors. Xano’s powerful API endpoints come packed with tools for filtering, validation, and data manipulation, making development smoother and keeping your data spot-on.

How to handle API request and response transformations in Xano?

Step 1: Create an API Endpoint

  1. Head over to the "API" section in Xano.
  2. Hit the "Add Endpoint" button to whip up a new API endpoint.
  3. Fill in the details like the endpoint's name, method (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE), and route.

Step 2: Define Input Parameters

  1. Jump to the "Inputs" tab within your shiny new endpoint.
  2. Click "Add Parameter" to set up the parameters your API will accept.
  • Give the parameter a name, type (text, number, boolean, etc.), and decide if it's required or optional.

Step 3: Build a Query or Action

  1. Navigate to the "Query & Actions" tab.
  2. Click "Add Action" and pick the action type (like "Database Request" or "External API Request").
  • Set up the action with the necessary details, like which table to query, filters, and any transformations.

Step 4: Transform Request Data

  1. Click "Add Function" in the "Query & Actions" tab.
  2. Choose a function from the list to transform the incoming request data. Examples:
  • xano.utils.parseJSON for parsing JSON strings.
  • xano.utils.pick to select specific fields from an object.
  1. Configure the function as needed to reshape the request data before it hits your action.

Step 5: Apply Data Operations

  1. Add operations like loops, conditionals, and modifications using the action blocks.
  • For instance, use a "Condition" block to perform branching logic based on certain criteria.
  • Use "Modify Variables" to tweak the structure or values of your data.

Step 6: Setup Response Transformations

  1. Head to the "Outputs" tab.
  2. Define the structure of the response by clicking "Add Response".
  3. Use functions and modifications to transform the response data before it goes back to the client.
  • Examples include:
    • xano.utils.stringifyJSON to convert objects back into JSON strings.
    • xano.utils.omit to leave out specific fields from the response.

Step 7: Test the Endpoint

  1. Use the built-in testing tool to send sample requests to your API.
  2. Check the transformed request and response data via the response output.
  • Debug any issues by peeking at the "Logs" for detailed info and troubleshooting.

Step 8: Finalize and Document

  1. Save all your changes and finalize the configurations.
  2. Optionally, document the endpoint details, input parameters, and potential response formats for easy reference.
  • Use the "Documentation" tab to add notes and descriptions.
