How to handle API request and response transformation pipelines in Xano?

Step 1: Create a New API Endpoint

  • Head over to the API section in your Xano dashboard.
  • Hit Add API Endpoint to whip up a new API endpoint.
  • Fill in the details like name, description, and HTTP method. Easy peasy.

Step 2: Configure Input Parameters

  • Click on Input to set up the input parameters for your API endpoint.
  • Add the parameters you need, and don't forget to specify their types (like string, integer, etc.).
  • If you need to, set default values and other constraints.

Step 3: Set Up Request Transformation

  • Click on Request to set up transformation rules for incoming requests.
  • Use Transform functions to validate, tweak, or enhance the input data before it gets processed.
  • Apply the necessary transformations, like converting data formats or cleaning up inputs.

Step 4: Implement Business Logic

  • Go to Function Stack to implement the business logic for your API.
  • Use functions like Database Query, Conditionals, Loops, etc., to handle the request.
  • Design your logic flow carefully to make sure data is handled correctly and responses are spot on.

Step 5: Configure Output Parameters

  • Click on Response to set up the output parameters for your API endpoint.
  • Add the output parameters you need, and specify their types (like JSON, XML, etc.).
  • Set defaults and any extra attributes if needed.

Step 6: Set Up Response Transformation

  • Go to the Response tab to set up transformation rules for outgoing responses.
  • Use Transform functions to format, filter, or enrich the output data before it goes back to the client.
  • Implement the necessary transformations, like converting data types or structuring the output.

Step 7: Test the API Endpoint

  • Use the API Explorer to test your new API endpoint.
  • Enter your input parameters and click Run to see the response.
  • Make sure the request and response transformations are working as expected.

Step 8: Deploy and Monitor

  • Once you're happy with the test results, publish the API endpoint.
  • Keep an eye on the API usage and performance from the Analytics or Monitoring sections.
  • Make adjustments to the transformations and logic as needed based on real-world usage data.
