How to design a relational schema in Bubble.io?

Understanding the Basics of Relational Schema in Bubble.io     Step 1: Define the Data Types (Tables)
  • Go to the Data tab in the Bubble editor.
  • Under the Data Types section, click on "Create a new type".
  • Name your new data type, which will act like a table in a relational database. Examples: Users, Orders, Products.
  Step 2: Add Fields (Columns)
  • Select a data type you created.
  • Under the Fields section, click on "Create a new field".
  • Give your field a name and choose the type of data it will hold (e.g., text, number, date).
  • Repeat this process to define all necessary fields for each data type.
Step 3: Establish Relationships Between Data Types
  • Open one of your data types.
  • When creating a new field, set the field type to another data type to establish a relationship. For example, if you want to link Orders to Users, create a field in Orders named "User" and set its type to "User".
  • To create a one-to-many relationship, use List of: Data Type. For example, a User can have many Orders, you might create a list of Orders within the User data type.
  • For many-to-many relationships, create intermediate types. For example, if Users can have many Roles and Roles can have many Users, you might create a UserRoles data type that references both User and Role.
Step 4: Set Privacy Rules (Optional)
  • Navigate to the Privacy tab under Data.
  • Add a new privacy role by clicking "Add a new rule".
  • Define the conditions under which users can read, modify, or delete records for each data type.
  • This ensures that sensitive data remains secure and accessible only by intended users.
Step 5: Utilize Data in Your App
  • In your app's design tab, use different elements like repeating groups, input fields, and text elements to display and manipulate your data.
  • Configure these elements to pull data from your data types.
  • Make sure to use workflows to create, read, update, and delete data entries as per your app's requirements.
  Step 6: Testing and Optimization
  • Test your data schema thoroughly by trying various CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations.
  • Ensure all relationships are correctly set up and performing as expected.
  • Optimize the database by eliminating redundant data and ensuring efficient queries.
  Best Practices
  • Consistently name your data types and fields for ease of understanding and maintenance.
  • Regularly back up your database.
  • Document your schema for future reference and onboarding new team members.
