How to create reusable components in Figma?

Step 1: Create a Frame for the Component

  • In Figma, start by making a new frame that will be the base for your reusable component.
  • Use the Frame tool (F) or press Shift + A to turn an existing selection into a frame.

Step 2: Design the Component

  • Inside the new frame, design your component with all the necessary elements, like text, shapes, or images.
  • Customize the styles, colors, and alignment as needed.

Step 3: Convert to Component

  • Select the frame you’ve designed.
  • Right-click and choose “Create Component” or use the shortcut Ctrl + Alt + K (Windows) or Command + Option + K (Mac).

Step 4: Name the Component

  • After converting the frame to a component, give it a proper name in the Layer panel.
  • Consistent and descriptive naming conventions help in identifying and managing components.

Step 5: Add Variants (Optional)

  • To create different states or variations of the component, use Figma’s “Variants” feature.
  • Select your component, click on the “Variants” button in the right-hand panel, and add different variants as needed.

Step 6: Use in Design

  • Drag the newly created component from the “Assets” panel into your design files wherever it's needed.
  • Instantly reuse this component, ensuring consistency across designs.

Step 7: Update as Needed

  • Any updates made to the original component will automatically propagate to all instances where the component is used.
  • Make sure to update the master component in the component library if changes are required.

Step 8: Organize Components

  • To keep your components organized, group related components into sections or create a separate Figma file designated for components.
  • Use the “Assets” panel to categorize and manage components effectively.

Step 9: Share with Team

  • Share the component library with team members by publishing it as a team library.
  • Go to the main menu, select “Team Library,” and publish the components for others to use in their designs.

Step 10: Documentation and Best Practices

  • Document the intended use, variants, and any constraints of the component.
  • Provide guidelines in a Figma page to ensure proper use and to maintain design consistency across the team’s projects.
