How to create responsive text styles in Figma?

Step 1: Open a New Figma File

Fire up Figma and start a new file by hitting the "+" button or picking "New File" from the file menu. Easy peasy.

Step 2: Create a Text Layer

Grab the Text Tool (shortcut T) and click anywhere on the canvas to start typing. Just like that, you've got a new text layer.

Step 3: Set Up a Text Style

Click on your text layer. Over on the right-hand side, you'll see the properties panel. Tweak the font, size, line height, and other settings until it looks just right. When you're happy with it, click the four-dot icon next to the font-size dropdown to create a text style. Give it a name that makes sense.

Step 4: Enable Auto Layout

Select your text layer again and hit the "Auto Layout" button in the properties panel. This will make your text adjust its size based on the content and constraints you set. Pretty cool, huh?

Step 5: Adjust Auto Layout Properties

Now that Auto Layout is on, you can tweak the padding, spacing, alignment, and resizing. Set “Hug contents” for both vertical and horizontal resizing so the text adjusts based on how much you type.

Step 6: Create a Frame for Responsive Behavior

Press F to create a frame and draw it around your text layer. Make sure the text layer is inside this frame. Set the frame's constraints to "Scale" or "Resize" to control how the text behaves when you resize the frame.

Step 7: Use Constraints and Resizing Options

Click on the text layer and check out the constraints and resizing options in the right-hand properties panel. Set constraints to match how you want the text to respond. For example, use "Left & Right" for horizontal alignment or "Top & Bottom" for vertical alignment. This way, the text resizes or repositions just right.

Step 8: Test Responsiveness

Time to test! Resize the frame and see how the text adjusts. Make sure all constraints and auto-layout settings are working as they should. Tweak anything that needs fixing.

Step 9: Apply Styles Consistently

Use this text style and auto-layout settings on other text layers and components in your design. This keeps everything looking consistent and responsive. Shared styles are your friend here.

Step 10: Save and Share

Once you're happy with everything, save your Figma file and share it with your team. Use the "Share" button in the upper-right corner to get feedback and make further refinements.
