How to create nested components in Figma?

Step 1: Create the Parent Component

  • Fire up Figma and either start a new Frame or pick one you already have.
  • Design your Parent Component by tossing in shapes, text, or whatever elements you need.
  • Highlight all the elements that make up your Parent Component.
  • Right-click and hit "Create Component" from the menu, or just press Cmd + Alt + K (Mac) / Ctrl + Alt + K (Windows).

Step 2: Design the Child Component

  • Create a new Frame or shape for your Child Component.
  • Design it by adding shapes, text, or any other elements you need.
  • Select everything inside this Frame.
  • Right-click and choose "Create Component" or use the shortcut Cmd + Alt + K (Mac) / Ctrl + Alt + K (Windows).

Step 3: Add the Child Component to the Parent Component

  • Select your shiny new Child Component.
  • Copy it with Cmd + C (Mac) / Ctrl + C (Windows).
  • Go back to your Parent Component.
  • Paste the Child Component into the Parent Component using Cmd + V (Mac) / Ctrl + V (Windows).

Step 4: Position and Adjust

  • After pasting, move the Child Component around within the Parent Component until it looks just right.
  • Resize and align the Child Component to fit nicely within the Parent Component’s layout.
  • Make any tweaks needed for visual harmony.

Step 5: Create the Nested Component

  • Select the Parent Component that now has the Child Component inside it.
  • Right-click and choose "Create Component" again, or use the shortcut Cmd + Alt + K (Mac) / Ctrl + Alt + K (Windows).
  • This will create a new component that nests the Child Component within the Parent Component, forming a Nested Component.

Step 6: Use the Nested Component

  • Drag the newly created Nested Component from the "Assets" panel onto any Frame in your Figma project.
  • Use the Nested Component in your designs, and any changes made to the master components will automatically update all instances in your project.

Step 7: Update and Override if Necessary

  • If you need to, you can override properties of instances of the Nested Component without messing up the Master Component.
  • Select an instance of the Nested Component.
  • Use the properties panel to change text, colors, or other properties while keeping the nested structure intact.

These steps help designers create a complex, nested component structure in Figma, making it easier to manage consistent and reusable design elements.
