How to create interactive maps in Figma prototypes?

Step 1: Prepare Your Map Image

  • First things first, grab a high-quality image of the map you want to use.
  • Then, just drag and drop that map image right onto your Figma canvas. Easy peasy.

Step 2: Create Map Markers

  • Use the "Ellipse" tool (O) to make circular markers for the spots you want to highlight on the map.
  • Customize those markers! Play around with their size, color, and border. Maybe set the fill color to #FF0000 (red) and the border color to #FFFFFF (white). Make them pop!

Step 3: Add Annotations or Tooltips

  • Grab the "Rectangle" tool (R) to create the background for your annotations or tooltips.
  • Add some text layers inside those rectangles to describe the points of interest. Use the "Text" tool (T) for this.
  • Group the rectangle and text layers together using Ctrl+G (or Command+G on Mac). Keep things tidy!

Step 4: Set Up Overlay Frames

  • Create separate frames for each annotation or tooltip. These will be your overlays.
  • Design these overlays so they’re the right size and in the right spot to show the info when someone clicks or hovers over a map marker.

Step 5: Link Markers to Overlays

  • Switch to prototype mode by clicking the "Prototype" tab in the right-hand panel.
  • Select a marker and drag a prototype link to the corresponding overlay frame.
  • Set the interaction type to "On Click" or "On Hover" depending on what you want.
  • Choose "Open overlay" as the action and tweak the overlay settings like position and backdrop blur.

Step 6: Test Interactions

  • Hit the "Present" button in the top-right corner to enter presentation mode.
  • Play around with the map by clicking or hovering over the markers to make sure the overlays show up as expected.

Step 7: Fine-Tuning

  • Adjust the positions, sizes, and interactions of the markers and overlays based on your testing feedback.
  • Make sure the user experience is smooth and intuitive by fixing any misalignments or awkward transitions.

Step 8: Share the Prototype

  • Invite your team members or stakeholders to review the prototype by sharing the Figma file or a presentation link.
  • Gather feedback and make any necessary tweaks to improve the final interactive map experience.

By following these steps, you can create interactive maps with clickable or hoverable points of interest in Figma prototypes.
