How to create custom transitions in Figma prototypes?

Step 1: Open Figma and Select Your Frames

First things first, open up Figma and pick out the frames you'll be using for your transition. These frames are like your starting and ending points, so design them based on what your prototype needs.

Step 2: Go to Prototype Mode

Now, switch over from the Design tab to the Prototype tab on the right-hand side. This is where the magic happens, letting you link frames together to make them interactive.

Step 3: Create Interactive Connections

Grab that blue circle with the white arrow (the connection handle) and drag it from the hotspot of your first frame to wherever you want it to go. It could be another frame or even a specific object within the frame.

Step 4: Customize the Transition

Once you've made the link, a properties panel will pop up on the right. Here, you can tweak the interaction details:

  • Trigger: Decide how the transition starts (e.g., On Click, On Drag, etc.)
  • Action: Choose "Navigate" to jump to another frame or "Overlay" to layer one frame over another.
  • Transition: By default, it's set to "Instant," but you can change it to options like "Smart Animate," "Move In," "Move Out," and so on.

Step 5: Adjust Easing and Duration

Fine-tune your transition by adjusting the easing (like Ease In, Ease Out, Ease In and Out, etc.) and the duration. The duration is in milliseconds (ms) and controls how long the transition takes.

Step 6: Configure Smart Animate (If Applicable)

If you picked "Smart Animate" for your transition, make sure elements in both frames have the same layer name. This helps Figma understand how to smoothly animate between the two frames.

Step 7: Preview Your Prototype

Hit the "Present" button in the top right corner to see your prototype in action. Play around with it to make sure everything's working as it should.

Step 8: Iterate and Refine

After previewing, you might need to go back and tweak things like easing, duration, or even the design and layout of your frames. Keep refining until your transitions are just right.
