How to create custom grids in Figma?

Step 1: Open Figma and Create a New Frame

  1. Fire up Figma and either dive into an existing project or start a fresh file.
  2. Grab the "Frame Tool" (F) from the toolbar or just hit the F key.
  3. Click and drag on the canvas to whip up a new frame, or pick a preset frame size from the right-hand panel.

Step 2: Access Layout Grid Settings

  1. With your frame selected, head over to the right-hand panel.
  2. Scroll down until you hit the "Layout Grid" section.
  3. Click the plus icon (+) to toss in a new grid.

Step 3: Choose the Grid Type

  1. Click on the dropdown next to "Grid" to pick your grid type. You can go with:
  • Grid: A neat grid of squares.
  • Columns: Vertical columns, great for responsive designs.
  • Rows: Horizontal rows, though these are used less often.
  1. Pick the one that fits your project like a glove.

Step 4: Customize the Grid

  1. For Uniform Grid:
  • Set the Size to decide how big each grid square should be.
  • Tweak the Color and Opacity if you need better visibility.
  1. For Columns:
  • Set the Count to the number of columns you want.
  • Adjust the Gutter width – that's the space between each column.
  • Set the Margins to define the spacing on the left and right of the grid.
  • Choose between Stretch to adjust the column width based on frame size or Center to keep columns centered.
  1. For Rows:
  • Set the Count to the number of rows you need.
  • Adjust the Gutter height – the space between each row.
  • Set the Margins to define the spacing at the top and bottom of the grid.
  • Choose between Stretch or Top/Bottom alignment for positioning rows.

Step 5: Apply Multiple Grids

  1. Click the plus icon (+) again to add another grid type if you need it.
  2. Repeat the customization steps to tweak the new grid settings.
  3. You can layer multiple grids to get a more complex layout.

Step 6: Fine-Tune Grid Settings

  1. Adjust the grid settings until you nail the layout you want.
  2. Toggle the visibility of grids on and off by clicking the eye icon next to the grid in the right-hand panel.

Step 7: Save Custom Grids for Reuse

  1. If you plan to use the grid settings across multiple frames or projects, think about creating a Figma component or style.
  2. Save the frame with the custom grid settings as a template for quick access later.

By following these steps, you can create and fine-tune custom grids to fit your project's needs in Figma.
