How to create and use component variants in Figma?

Step 1: Create a Component

- First, design the element that will become the base of your component. This could be a button, card, input field, etc. - Select the element or group of elements. - Convert the selection into a component by either: - Right-clicking and selecting "Create Component." - Using the keyboard shortcut `⌘ + ⌥ + K` (Mac) or `Ctrl + Alt + K` (Windows).

Step 2: Open the Variants Panel

- Make sure the new component is selected. - Look over to the right-hand sidebar and find the "Variants" section.

Step 3: Add a Variant

- In the "Variants" section, click the "+" button to add a new variant of the initial component. - The new variant will pop up next to the original component in a new "Variants Container."

Step 4: Modify the Variant

- Select the newly created variant within the "Variants Container." - Make the necessary changes to differentiate this variant from the original component. For example, change the button color, text, or size.

Step 5: Rename the Variants

- Click on the variant in the "Variants Container." - Rename each variant to something descriptive like "Primary," "Secondary," "Disabled" in the right-hand sidebar. - Use the "Property" and "Value" fields to give clear names for better management.

Step 6: Use Variants in Your Design

- Drag the main component (the one with variants) into your design workspace. - Switch variants by using the right-hand sidebar properties. For example, set the "State" property to "Primary," "Secondary," etc.

Step 7: Utilize Autolayout (Optional)

- Enable Auto Layout settings for your component and its variants to manage dynamic resizing and spacing. - Adjust padding, alignment, and spacing to ensure that all variants behave correctly in different layouts.

Step 8: Publish Components to Team Library (Optional)

- Once the variants are ready, you can publish them to the team library. - Select the main component and click the "Publish" button in the top-right corner of Figma. - This allows other team members to use and maintain consistency across projects.

Each step provides clear directions for creating and managing component variants in Figma, ensuring that the process is efficient and systematic.
