How to create and manage icons in Figma?

Step 1: Create a New Project

Fire up Figma in your browser or desktop app. Hit that "New File" button to kick off a fresh project where you'll be crafting your icons.

Step 2: Set Up Your Canvas

Tweak the canvas size to fit your project's needs. Using a grid system can be super handy for alignment, so head over to "Layout Grid" on the right-hand panel to set one up.

Step 3: Draw Your Icon

Grab the shape tools from the top toolbar (rectangle, ellipse, line, etc.) and start sketching your icon. For custom shapes, use the pen tool. Keep things consistent—like stroke weight and corner radii.

Step 4: Group and Name Your Layers

Once your icon is drawn, select all the related shapes and group them with Cmd+G (Mac) or Ctrl+G (Windows). Give your group a proper name in the Layers panel to keep things tidy.

Step 5: Convert to Components

Turn your icon group into a reusable component by selecting it and clicking the "Create Component" button or pressing Cmd+Alt+K (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+K (Windows). This way, you can reuse the icon throughout your project.

Step 6: Manage Icon Variants

If your icon has different states (like active or inactive), create extra components for each state. Use Figma’s "Variants" feature to group these states together.

Step 7: Organize in an Icon Library

Drag your icon components into a dedicated frame or page named "Icon Library." This keeps all your icons in one place. You can publish this frame as a library for other projects by going to "Assets" > "Team Library" and clicking "Publish."

Step 8: Export Icons

Select the components you want to export. Click on "Export" at the bottom of the right-hand panel. Pick the format you need (SVG, PNG, etc.) and the right sizes. Click "Export" to save the files.

Step 9: Use Icons in Projects

To use an icon in your project, just drag the component from the "Assets" panel into your canvas. Since they are components, any changes to the original design will update all instances.

Step 10: Keep Updated

Regularly update your icon components to reflect any design changes or new icons. Let your team know to re-sync the library to get the latest updates.

Step 11: Version Control

Use Figma’s version control by frequently saving version history through “File” > “Save to Version History.” This helps you go back to previous designs if needed.

Step 12: Documentation

Create a documentation page in your Figma file explaining the usage guidelines, sizes, colors, and variations of your icons. This serves as a handy reference for designers and developers.
