How to create and manage Figma branches for design exploration?

Step 1: Open Your Figma File

  • Head over to your Figma dashboard.
  • Find the file you want to branch out from and give it a click.

Step 2: Open the File's Main Menu

  • In the top left corner, click on the file name or the hamburger menu to see the file options.

Step 3: Select "Branch"

  • In the dropdown menu, find and click on the "Branch" option to start a new branch of your file.

Step 4: Name Your Branch

  • A popup will show up asking for a branch name. Give it a clear name like "New Design Exploration" or "Feature Update".

Step 5: Create the Branch

  • Hit "Create" to finish making the branch. Now you've got a new branch off the main file.

Step 6: Work on Your Branch

  • Go ahead and make your design changes in this branch. These changes won't mess with the main file or other branches.

Step 7: Review and Test Changes

  • Once you're done with your design work, review it yourself or with your team to make sure everything looks good.

Step 8: Merge Branches

  • Head back to the main menu and click "Merge Branches".
  • Pick the branch you want to merge into the main file.
  • Make sure all changes are good to go and click "Merge".

Step 9: Resolve Conflicts

  • If there are any conflicts between the main file and the branch, Figma will let you know. You'll need to manually review and fix these conflicts before finishing the merge.

Step 10: Delete Unused Branches

  • After merging, if you don't need certain branches anymore, clean up by deleting them. This keeps things tidy.
  • To delete a branch, go to the branch you want to delete, open the context menu, and select "Delete".

Step 11: Regularly Update the Main File

  • For ongoing projects, keep merging changes from different branches into the main file regularly. This way, the main file stays up-to-date with all the latest design changes.
