Overview

Design tokens have become vital in today's UI/UX design scene. They offer a structured way to keep designs consistent and scalable. In Figma, the process of creating and managing these tokens kicks off by defining core elements. Think colors, typography, spacing, and other properties, all set as reusable styles. Applying these tokens across different design projects helps to maintain uniformity throughout. An effective organization of tokens within Figma's design system, alongside keeping them updated, can significantly streamline collaborative efforts. This enhances design consistency and makes handoffs to development teams much simpler.

How to create and manage design tokens in Figma?

Step 1: Open Figma and Create a New File

  • Fire up Figma and start a fresh design file.
  • Give it a name that makes sense, like Design Tokens Library.

Step 2: Define Color Tokens

  • Add a new page in your file and call it Colors.
  • Begin by setting up color styles.
  • Look for the Fill option on the right-hand side.
  • Hit the + next to Fill to create a new color style.
  • Name it something clear, like Primary / Blue 500.
  • Add more colors like Secondary / Red 500, Neutral / Gray 300, and so on.

Step 3: Set Up Typography Tokens

  • Create another page and name it Typography.
  • Define text styles for headers, body text, captions, etc.
  • Use the text tool (T).
  • Type some sample text and format it.
  • Click the Four Dots icon next to the text formatting options to create a Text Style.
  • Name it clearly, like H1 / Large, Body / Medium, Caption / Small.
  • Repeat for all necessary text styles.

Step 4: Create Spacing Tokens

  • Make a new page called Spacing.
  • Use the rectangle tool to create spacers for different spacing values.
  • Draw a rectangle and set its dimensions to, say, 8px, 16px, 24px.
  • Label each rectangle with its spacing value.
  • Turn each rectangle into a component for easy re-use.

Step 5: Develop Custom Components

  • Create a new page named Components.
  • Design complex components like buttons, cards, and forms.
  • Use the color, typography, and spacing tokens you defined earlier.
  • Convert these designs into components by selecting the design and pressing Cmd + Alt + K (or Ctrl + Alt + K on Windows).

Step 6: Organize Tokens into a Design System

  • Use Figma’s Team Library feature.
  • Publish your styles and components by going to Assets > Library (book icon) > Publish.
  • This makes your design tokens accessible across different projects.

Step 7: Document Tokens Clearly

  • Create a page called Documentation.
  • Add clear descriptions for each category of design tokens.
  • Use text to explain their usage and naming conventions.
  • Include visual aids like color swatches, typography samples, and component previews.

Step 8: Keep Tokens Updated

  • Regularly review and refine your design tokens.
  • Update any changes directly in the Design Tokens Library.
  • Republish the library to ensure all linked projects have the latest updates.

Step 9: Collaborate with Your Team

  • Share the Design Tokens Library with team members.
  • Encourage input and feedback to make sure the tokens meet everyone’s needs.
  • Use Figma’s comment and version control features to manage feedback and updates.

By following these steps, design tokens will consistently be managed and integrated within Figma, ensuring a cohesive design language across all projects.
