How to create a custom dropdown menu with Webflow interactions?

Step 1: Setup the Structure

Alright, let's get started by setting up the structure for our dropdown menu. We'll need a Div Block to act as the container, a Button to trigger the dropdown, and another Div Block for the dropdown content.

  1. First, add a Div Block and name it Dropdown Container.
  2. Inside this Div Block, add a Button and name it Dropdown Trigger.
  3. Below the Button, add another Div Block and name it Dropdown Content. This is where your menu items will go.

Step 2: Style the Components

Now, let's make this dropdown look good.

  1. Select the Dropdown Container and set its position to Relative.
  2. Select the Dropdown Content and set its position to Absolute. This way, it aligns nicely under the trigger button.
  3. Set the Dropdown Content to Display: None so it stays hidden until we need it.
  4. Inside Dropdown Content, add your menu items (like Link Blocks or Text Blocks). Style them however you like.

Step 3: Add the Interactions

Time to add some interactions to make the dropdown work.

  1. Select the Dropdown Trigger button, go to the Interactions panel, and create a new interaction.

  2. Choose Mouse Click (Tap) as the trigger and set this interaction to On 1st Click.

  3. Add an action to Show/Hide the dropdown menu by affecting Dropdown Content. Set it to Display Block and pick a transition you like (e.g., Fade In or Slide Down).

  4. For the closing functionality:

  • Still in the same interaction, set a second action for On 2nd Click.
  • Add an action to Show/Hide the dropdown menu by affecting Dropdown Content. Set it to Display: None and choose a transition (e.g., Fade Out or Slide Up).

Step 4: Add Close Interaction for Click Outside

We also want the dropdown to close when clicking outside of it.

  1. Select the Body element or any parent container large enough to cover the desired click area.
  2. Create a new interaction with the trigger set to Mouse Click (Tap).
  3. Add a condition check to hide the dropdown only if it’s currently visible:
  • Check if Dropdown Content is set to Display: Block.
  • If true, change Dropdown Content to Display: None and apply a transition (e.g., Fade Out).

Step 5: Test and Troubleshoot

Finally, preview the webpage and test the dropdown interaction. Make any necessary adjustments to the interaction timing or styles to ensure a seamless user experience.

Remember to test the dropdown menu across different devices and screen sizes to ensure it behaves as expected.
