How to Build Real-Time Notifications with Adalo

 

Step 1: Set Up an Adalo Account

 

  • Go to the Adalo website and create an account or log in if you already have one.
  • Start a new project to build your app or open an existing project where you want to add notifications.

 

Step 2: Create a Collection for Notifications

 

  • In the Adalo editor, navigate to the "Database" section on the left sidebar.
  • Click "+ Add Collection" and name it "Notifications".
  • Add properties to the Notifications collection such as "Title", "Message", "User", "Read" (boolean), and "Timestamp".

 

Step 3: Set Up User Collection

 

  • Ensure you have a "Users" collection in your database. If not, create one.
  • Add necessary properties like "Name", "Email", and "Device ID" (for push notifications). The Device ID will be used to target notifications specifically to each user.

 

Step 4: Define Notification Triggers

 

  • Determine the events in your app that will trigger notifications (e.g., a new message, a comment on a post, a like, etc.).
  • Go to the screen where these events occur and add actions to create notification records in the "Notifications" collection.
  • For example, in a messaging app, when a new message is sent, add an action to create a new notification entry with relevant details.

 

Step 5: Display Notifications in the App

 

  • Design a "Notifications" screen or component in your app where users can view their notifications.
  • Add a list component to this screen and connect it to the "Notifications" collection.
  • Filter the list to show only notifications related to the logged-in user and sort them by "Timestamp" for recent ones first.
  • Add visual elements (e.g., icons, badge) to indicate unread notifications by checking the "Read" status.

 

Step 6: Mark Notifications as Read

 

  • Configure the behavior when a user views a notification (e.g., click or tap on it).
  • Add an action to update the "Read" status to true, so the notification is marked as read.

 

Step 7: Enable Push Notifications (Optional)

 

  • Go to Adalo's marketplace and install a push notification component (e.g., OneSignal or Firebase Cloud Messaging).
  • Set up the push notification provider by creating an account on the chosen service (OneSignal or Firebase).
  • Obtain the necessary keys and IDs, configure them in the Adalo push notification component settings.
  • Add actions to send a push notification alongside creating a notification record when the defined event triggers.
